A cat in trouble hides it, and that is the whole problem
Almost every piece of hot-weather advice you will find is written about dogs. Cooling vests, walks at dawn, paw burns on asphalt. Cats get a line at the end, if that.
The reason is uncomfortable: a cat that is too hot is far less obvious than a dog that pants. It goes quiet, finds the coolest tile in the house, eats less and sleeps more. That reads like ordinary summer laziness, which is exactly why people notice late.
If a cat is visibly panting, that is not a mild sign, it is a late one. Unlike a dog, panting is not part of a cat’s normal repertoire. If it comes with restlessness, an unsteady walk, dark red gums or vomiting, the animal needs a vet straight away, not a mat.
Why it works differently on a cat than on a dog

The difference is the animal. A cat takes up less room but stays in the same spot far longer, and it picks that spot itself rather than being assigned one. Three practical consequences follow.
Placement decides everything. A mat put down somewhere new gets ignored. The same mat put where the cat already sleeps is accepted almost every time within a few days.
Surface beats precision. Because a cat shifts around as it stretches, a mat that is slightly too big always beats one measured to the inch: when they turn over, they land straight on an area that is still cool.
Claws are the real issue. Cats knead, and a fabric that gives out after one summer is money wasted. On a cat mat, how the seams hold matters more than the last degree of performance.
The most common mistake: assuming a cat means size S
Most shops sort sizes by species. That gets it wrong often, because the difference in build between one cat and another is bigger than the gap between a small dog and a large cat.
A domestic shorthair weighs around 9 lb, a British Shorthair 11 to 15. A male Maine Coon reaches 18 lb and over three feet nose to tail: it is the largest domestic breed in the world. A Maine Coon does not fit on a 19.7×15.7 in mat. A four-pound Chihuahua, on the other hand, fits it comfortably, dog or not.

“Is it safe?” is the question that comes before all the others
The worry is about gel, and it is justified whenever there actually is gel: cats knead with their claws and chew fabric. If a pouch opens, the gel spreads through the coat and ends up in the mouth during grooming.
It is worth saying plainly, because plenty of people go looking for gel on purpose: “gel filled dog cooling mat” is a search people actually type, believing that is the right product. Our mat contains no gel. It is a stitched multi-layer fabric, and there is no liquid inside it that can escape.

The second point is temperature. Since nothing is frozen, there is no risk of over-cooling and no maximum time of use: the cat stays on it for as long as it suits her and gets up when she has had enough. Getting your cat used to it in a week
Cats do not accept something new in their territory on command. Put the mat in a new spot and wait, and you will often wait in vain, and it is not the mat’s fault.
Days one to three: put the mat where your cat already sleeps, not next to it and not somewhere better. Lay a blanket or a piece of your own clothing on top so it smells familiar. Do not pick it up and do not lift the cat onto it.
Days four to seven: take the blanket away as soon as you see her lying on it by herself. If your cat heads for the cool bathroom tile in the morning, that is the clue to where the mat will be accepted most easily.
After that: if it still is not working, try a second spot with a little air movement, near a window or a doorway. And if that does not do it either, send it back. You have 30 days and the return is free.

What the market offers, and what it leaves out
The first page of results for a cat cooling mat is mostly large marketplaces and pet chains, with a few independent sites in among them that ran their own side-by-side tests. Independent write-ups ranking that high say something precise: on this product, other people’s experience carries more weight than the sales copy of whoever is selling it.
The one thing worth looking for on any of those listings is the fiber composition, in percentages. Without it nobody can explain why a mat should cool, or judge whether it will take claws. Go by weight, not by species. For a domestic shorthair or a British Shorthair, the S at 19.7×15.7 in is enough. A male Maine Coon weighs 13 to 18 lb and can stretch over three feet nose to tail: that one needs the M at 27.6×21.7 in. If you have several cats, one large mat beats two small ones, because they tend to lie down against each other.
My cat will not lie on it. What now?
This happens more with cats than with dogs, and it is almost always about habit. Put the mat where they already sleep rather than somewhere new, and for a few days lay a blanket or a piece of your clothing on it so it smells familiar. Three to seven days is usually enough. If it still does not work, you have 30 days to send it back.
Why did my cat pee on the mat?
It is rare, and it is almost never about the mat. A new surface in the territory can trigger marking, especially in a multi-cat household. Wash it cold with an enzymatic cleaner so the smell goes completely, and move it somewhere quieter. If it happens again, or if your cat is urinating outside the litter box elsewhere too, talk to your vet: urinary tract problems can be behind it.
Can I put it in the carrier?
Yes, and it is one of the best places for it. It stays flat, it does not slide, and on a summer trip it makes the carrier far more bearable. Never leave your cat alone in a parked car regardless.
