Why 75% polyamide is the part that actually matters
Almost every seller says their mat cools. Almost none says what it is made of. We read the pages that rank on the first page for dog cooling mat: not one of them gives a fiber breakdown in percentages. A seller who will not state the composition cannot explain why their mat should cool in the first place.
Ours is where it belongs, which is before you buy. The top layer is 75% polyamide, the rest polyester. Polyamide carries heat; cotton and polyester barely do. That is what you feel when you put your hand on it, and that is what pulls heat out of your dog the moment they lie down. The cotton filling underneath acts as a cushion, and the mesh on the bottom lets the heat out.

No gel, no water, no power, no freezer
Gel mats cool harder, but for a limited stretch, and then they need to rest. The real trouble starts when a dog chews: an opened pouch means gel on the coat, on the floor and, once the animal has cleaned itself, in the mouth. Water-filled models are heavy and they leak. Freezer models take up space, go stiff, and run out in a couple of hours.
Does it need to go in the fridge first? No, and it does not need the freezer either. The Frimouf Ice works straight out of the box, with no water to pour in and nothing to recharge. That is exactly why you can take it in the car, on vacation or out in the yard, where a fridge is not an option.
Any reason not to use it? Our mat is a stitched multi-layer fabric with no liquid inside: if your pet chews it, nothing comes out. And since nothing is frozen, there is no risk of over-cooling, unlike freezer plates and chilled packs, which need a towel in between and an eye on them. Normal fabric caution still applies: a puppy in its destructive phase is better kept away.
The honest limit: the Frimouf Ice does not make cold, it moves heat. It never drops below room temperature. That is enough for a hot afternoon in the living room. It does not replace shade and fresh water during a heat wave, and it will not save a dog shut in a car.
America’s favorite breeds are the ones that struggle most in the heat
In the American Kennel Club’s 2025 rankings, the French Bulldog is the most registered breed in the country, for the fourth year running. Then come the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd. Those four sit at the top of the list, and all four have a hard time in summer for one of two reasons.
The clearest case is the short-nosed dogs: the French Bulldog, the Bulldog, the Pug. A dog regulates its temperature almost entirely by panting, and a flat-faced dog does exactly that badly. It gets stuck in the heat. For that dog a cool surface is not a comfort, it is the one route left to shed heat, through the belly where the coat is thin.
The second reason is the double coat. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Bernese Mountain Dogs carry an undercoat that insulates against cold and, just as effectively, against relief from heat. Do not shave it, though: that same coat is what shields them from the sun.
One clarification, because AKC numbers say something specific: they are pedigree registrations, not the actual dog population. Most dogs in American homes are mixed breed, and no breed table covers them. For those dogs, three things decide it: length of the muzzle, thickness of the coat, and weight.
The right size depends on weight, not on species
A Chihuahua weighs four pounds; a Maine Coon can reach eighteen. Choosing by species gets it wrong often. Go by weight, and by the surface your animal can actually stretch out on: a dog that hangs halfway off only cools halfway.

Cleaning: damp cloth, machine wash, air dry
For everyday use a damp cloth is enough: hair, dust and sand come off and the surface is ready again straight away. For a deeper clean, the mat goes in the machine on a cold gentle cycle, then air dries.
Two things to avoid: the tumble dryer, because heat is bad for the fiber, and fabric softener. Softener leaves a film on the fabric and works against the one thing the mat is meant to do, which is take heat in and pass it on.
A mat that travels with you
It is light, it folds and it fits in a bag. In the car it goes on the back seat or in the crate, on vacation it goes in the rental, in the yard it goes under the umbrella. Since nothing is filled with anything, nothing can leak onto your seats.

A cooling mat does not bring down a fever and it will not save a dog left in a hot car.

Do vets recommend cooling mats for dogs?
We are not going to put words in a veterinarian’s mouth: no vet has tested this mat, and we do not claim any veterinary endorsement. What is widely documented is which dogs struggle most in heat, and it is not a matter of opinion. Dogs do not sweat through their skin, they cool down by panting, and panting works poorly for short-nosed breeds and for dogs with a double coat. The French Bulldog, the most registered breed in the United States, is in the first group; Labradors, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are in the second. If your dog has a heart or breathing condition, is overweight, or is elderly, ask your own vet before changing anything about how you manage the heat.

Are dog cooling mats safe? Is the gel toxic?
Ours has no gel at all. It is a stitched multi-layer fabric, so there is no liquid that can escape if your pet chews a corner. That is the actual difference with gel mats, which need watching when a dog gnaws. There is no risk of over-cooling either, because nothing is frozen: the mat never drops below room temperature. Normal fabric caution still applies, and a puppy in its destructive phase is better kept away from it.
Can you put a dog cooling mat in the freezer?
You do not need to, and we would rather you did not. It works straight out of the packaging, at room temperature. There is no water to fill, no freezer step, nothing to recharge. That is exactly why it travels: in the car, at a rental, at a campsite, anywhere a freezer is not part of the plan. Forcing it cold also defeats the point, since the mat is designed to draw heat away steadily rather than shock your dog with cold.
How long does the cooling last?
There is no timer, there is a condition: the mat cools for as long as heat can flow away from it. If your dog stays perfectly still in one spot for a long time, the temperature under them evens out and the effect fades in that spot; the moment they get up or turn over, the surface is cool again within minutes. Nothing runs out, so there is nothing to recharge and no break to schedule.
How long will the mat itself last?
That is a different question from the one above. The cooling effect does not wear out, because it does not depend on a filling that eventually runs dry. What ages is the fabric. With normal use, a cold gentle wash and air drying, the mat lasts several summers. Gel models, by contrast, lose filling or puncture over time, and that is the most common reason people buy a second one.
Can you wash a dog cooling mat?

Your dog regulates it themselves: they get on when they are hot and walk off when they have had enough. That is the real advantage over cold that is imposed on them.
What if my dog will not lie on it?
It happens, and it is almost always a question of habit rather than of product. Put it where they already sleep instead of in a new corner, and leave a blanket or a piece of your clothing on it for a few days so it smells familiar. Three to seven days is usually enough. If they still refuse it, you have 30 days to change your mind and the return costs you nothing.
